First Two Doug Wright 39 Carbon Waves And Wheels Edition Cats Nearing Completion

Last week during a visit to Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri, Brian Blount, a longtime powerboat enthusiast from Oregon, had a chance to get an up-close look at his new catamaran—a Doug Wright Powerboats 39 Carbon Waves and Wheels Edition—not long after the 39-footer moved from the paint booth to rigging.

And the experienced boater, who currently has a 36-foot Wright Performance cat he plans to keep and previously owned a 38-foot Donzi Marine V-bottom, was blown away by the progress made by the team at Waves and Wheels since his last visit to Osage Beach earlier this year, not long after the carbon-fiber 39-footer was delivered from the Melbourne, Fla., production facility to Missouri.

“I was impressed when I saw the new boat and how far it has come,” said Blount, who enjoys traveling with his wife, Leslie, and their two adult sons to experience different waterways. “We really like our 36, but I wanted something a little bit bigger to run offshore and take to Florida. It’s supposed to be done this summer so we’ll spend some time with it at Lake of the Ozarks and then send it Florida to do some poker runs down there. After the winter, we’ll figure out where it’s going from there.”

Brian Blount, left, enjoyed his visit with Waves and Wheels owner Justin Wagner to see his new 39-foot Doug Wright coming together.

He added that the level of fit and finish he’s seen so far from the team at Waves and Wheels has been really nice.

“Waves and Wheels has done a great job,” Blount said, adding that he can’t wait to get a chance to run the boat, which is going to be powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 500R engines and features the same paint colors as his 36-foot cat with a slightly different design on the deck that carries over to the hullsides more than his other one.

Although he’s not sure he’ll be able to make it to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout at the end of August, Blount expects the 39-footer to be ready prior to the popular event and possibly be on display at the Shootout On The Strip street party that has been presented by Waves and Wheels for several years.

“I had an awesome time visiting with Brian and getting some more details planned for the boat—he’s been so fun to work with,” said Justin Wagner, the owner and founder of Waves and Wheels. “He’s also a hell of a boater with a lot of experience so he knew exactly what he wanted. At the same time, he gave us some creative leeway, especially with the interior, which my team always appreciates.

“Brian wanted to keep things clean and simple and we respected that,” he added. “He’s conservative in his tastes but he was receptive to some of the edgier things we suggested doing for the interior. I can’t wait to show off this boat.”

A common expression out of his mouth, the proud Wagner also said Waves and Wheels recently took delivery of the Doug Wright dealer’s second 39-foot cat, which he plans to keep as a company demo boat.

“Our demo 39 Carbon is currently in paint getting its primer coat,” Wagner said. “Our second 42 Carbon and second 36 Carbon are in production at Doug Wright and we have a third 39 Carbon in the works as well.”

Wagner expects to have both Blount’s new boat and the Waves and Wheels demo boat at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. While the new 36- and 42-foot cats in production haven’t been sold yet, he said he’s had some serious interest and is ready to take orders for future builds.
