Onken Racing’s American Ethanol Going With 9,000 HP for Upcoming Shootouts

Even with the change in course length from one mile to three quarters of a mile, Don Onken’s 51-foot Mystic Powerboats catamaran American Ethanol is likely the clear-cut favorite to be the fastest boat at any top-speed shootout event it competes in this season. That’s a pretty fair assumption when you consider the boat’s accomplishments last year: The quad-engine Mystic ran 206 mph at the Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees (GLOC) Performance Boat Challenge Shootout in Grove, Okla., and backed up its 208-mph Top Gun-winning effort at the 2015 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout with the fastest speed ever recorded at the event in a non-turbine-powered boat, 217 mph.

And all of that was with the “smaller” 1,700-hp engines.

Battleship Run Entering 27th Year On Lake Seneca

One of the longest-standing powerboat events in the Northeast, the 27th annual Rochester Offshore Powerboat Association Battleship Run on upstate New York’s idyllic Lake Seneca is set this year for July 14-16. Registration for the run is still open and sponsorship opportunities “are still available, though sponsor docks in front of the (host) Show Boat Hotel are almost gone,” according to a representative from the club.

According to information on the ROPA website, the folks at Rochester Offshore, then an American Power Boat Association division, decided to transform the organization into a performance boating club—rather than remain a local APBA race producer—in 1990. That move gave birth to the first Battleship Run on Lake Seneca, and it has been the club’s signature event ever since.

As in years past, the 70-mile Battleship Run will feature three speed-defined—50, 70- and 100-mph—separate running groups. Safety is at the top of the club’s priority list. Racing in any form is forbidden, as is passing the pace boats. Personal floation devices are mandatory for all occupants of the boats when the vessels are on plane. Alcohol consumption on the water during the run is forbidden.

The Battleship Run attracts a solid contigent of high-performance powerboats and offers family fun in a low-key atmosphere.

The registration fee is $190 for the boat and driver/owner, who must be a ROPA club member. Passengers are $75 per person. Saturday night dinner tickets are $25 per person. (There is no dinner charge for children up to 12 years old.)

For more registration and additional information on the Battleship Run, visit the ROPA website.

CBPA Crew Pumped And Prepped For Bimini Run This Weekend

First-time events in the go-fast powerboating world always present the kinds of challenges that come with uncertainty and unfamiliarity and the anxiety they create among participants and organizers. That’s especially true for inaugural events in foreign countries. But none of that is dampening spirits of the owners of 30-plus powerboats heading to Bimini as part of the Chesapeake Bay Powerboat Association’s first weekend fun run to tiny Bahamian island paradise. The run is happening in conjunction with Offshore Powerboat Association's inaugural Bimini World Resorts race on the same weekend, and several CBPA boats will serve as support vessels for the 20- to 30-raceboat fleet.

Wozencraft To Tackle First Tickfaw 200 Poker Run

Not having missed a Desert Storm Poker Run in more years than he can immediately remember, high-performance powerboat insurance man Devin Wozencraft had a tough decision to make when he learned that the event would overlap with the 30th annual Tickfaw 200 Poker Run on the same May 4-7 dates this year. While Southern California-based Wozencraft Insurance Agency will still have its display at the Desert Storm Street Party on McCulloch Avenue in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and its traditional card-stop presence during the poker run on the lake the following day, the company’s namesake has decided to run the Tickfaw 200, which reportedly attracted more than 340 registered boats last year, event in Louisiana in his 30-foot Wozencraft-branded Skater Powerboats catamaran.

For Wozencraft, this year's 200-mile Tickfaw event will be his first.

Performance Boat Center-Sold Skater 426 Finds A Home

Built in 2015 and dressed with a new paintjob by Performance Boat Center and a new interior from Waves and Wheels—both located in the Lake of the Ozarks area in Central Missouri—a Skater Powerboats 426 catamaran has found a home with first-time catamaran owners Don Doty and Carolann Kent of Howell, Mich. Doty, a longtime V-bottom owner, and Kent headed to the 2016 Miami International Boat with the goal of buying a V-bottom, but thanks to Brett Manire and the team at Performance Boat Center ended up with the unique 42-foot cat powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1350 engines.

“I’d say 50 percent of our decision was the boat, and 50 percent was the people at Performance Boat Center," said Kent “Brett and his people made us feel super comfortable when we asked them questions.”
