Tres Martin’s Safety Corner: Five Poker Run Essentials

With the largest wave of the largest poker run of the year headed from Miami to Key West tomorrow in the Florida Powerboat Club's annual Key West Poker Run, we thought it would be a good time to revisit some basics from Tres Martin, the founder of the noted Performance Boat School that bears his name. Without question, you've heard all of this before. Without question, it's worth hearing again.

Tres Martin’s Safety Corner: Dress For Success

On a hot day, there's nothing particularly comfortable about any personal flotation device. No one argues that. Tres Martin’s Safety Corner: Grading The Course

Since speedonthewater.com launched this department almost a year ago, Performance Boat School founder Tres Martin has tackled subjects from the obvious such as how drinking and boating never mix to the subtle such as the hidden danger areas on your boat. When I caught up with Martin yesterday and we began brainstorming his next safety column, he was still pretty pumped up from the driving course he'd taught earlier this summer to Rick Bowling on Lake Tahoe in California. Tres Martin’s Safety Corner: Take Extra Care This Holiday Weekend

Two things you can count on during this July 4 weekend, especially if the weather is good. First, your local waterway will be packed. Second, it will be packed with a higher-than-usual number of less-than-cautious-and-skilled and possibly "over-served" vessel operators. That doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy your time on the water in your performance boat during this Independence Day weekend, it just means you have to be extra careful and aware while you do.

Seems that Bowling is getting into the habit of taking his 37-foot Talon catamaran, Gone Again, to McCovey Cove in San Francisco Bay to check out the cove flotilla at Giants games. (You can read the story by clicking here.)
