Nor-Tech At 35—The 600 Club

Introduced in early 2021, Mercury Marine’s 600-hp V-12 outboard engine found a welcome home with builders that offer large, heavy center consoles. The first Nor-Tech model to be equipped with four of the naturally aspirated beasts was a 50-footer delivered by Bob Crow of SoFlo Boats, a Nor-Tech in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the following summer.

It tipped the scale at 30,000 pounds.

Nor-Tech delivered its first quad V-12 outboard-powered 50 foot center in 2022.

“It’s a massive boat with a Seakeeper system, generators, air conditioning, a massive hardtop and more,” Crow said of the 15-ton vessel after the delivery. “It’s perfectly balanced with those outboards—it rides level and doesn’t dip in the stern—and because the engines have so much torque combined with duo-prop lower units it comes on plane very flat and level. Hole-shot was impressive.

“And as big as it is, it’s very predictable, stable and nimble in turns,” he added. “I was quite impressed. It has a nice, tight feel.”

Yet quad V-12 outboard packages never caught fire with Nor-Tech 500 Sport center console buyers. To date, just four 50-footers have been built those quad 600-hp engines

“”Our 50 Sport buyers prefer quint 500-hp V-8 outboards,” explained Henrik Margård, Nor-Tech’s chief operating officer.

For the record, in addition to the four previously noted quad V-12 50-footers, Nor-Tech has produced a 550 Sport with quads, a 450 Sport center console with triples and a 550 Flyer with quads.
