Szolack Checks In On Skater 368 And 388 Projects

At any given moment, Ron Szolack has at least one boat for sale—often of the Skater Powerboats catamaran kind—and other being built. Right now on the sales side, he has multiple boats listed. On the build side, he has Skater 388 and 368 catamarans in the offing.

Szolack, who lives mostly at the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri but plans to spend the winter in Southwest Florida, recently visited the Douglas, Mich., builder to check the status of the two projects. He was joined by his friend and fellow Michigan native Steve Smarsh, the owner of HydraFoam marine decking.

According to Ron Szolack, he is building his latest Skater 368 Widebody catamaran as a personal boat.

“Steve and my brother, who came with us, had never been to Skater before, so that was fun,” Szolack explained. “It was a good visit because I met Craig and Sherry from Appearance Products there to go over the interior on the new 388. It has tall freeboard cut for no hood scoops, so I had to get adjusted for the seats how I like them.

“As for the 368 Widebody it was a great visit because I got to design the dash I wanted,” he added. “It’s going to be something new and cool.”

As previously reported, Georgia-based Kasse Racing Engines is building twin dual-calibration, 2,000/1500-hp  engines for the 36-footer, which he described as his “personal” boat.

“I never really built a personal boat,” Szolack said. “I usually sell them all. So this is what I’m finally doing for myself.”

A pair of 1,100-hp Mercury Racing engines will power the 38-footer. According to Szolack, Performance Boat Center of Osage Beach, Mo., will rig both catamarans.

“I figure I’m there every day anyway,” he said, then laughed. “So it will give me something to do.”

“Both boats will ready in time for the summer,” he added.
